While the majority of Hartley TS16's are made of wood there are a small number of fibre glass boats. All of these fibre glass boats come from an approved fibre glass mould that was made with the same measurements as the Hartley TS 16 plans. There were about 80 boats built from it and it has worn out and been dumped. The cost of these boats was also about the same as a timber boat.
There are a few Foam Sandwich Boats being built from male moulds using a foam sandwich technique. These boats can be produced by anyone with reasonable fibre glassing skills, relevantly quickly and at significantly cheaper cost that female mould and timber boats. Considering the cost of timber and special tools needed to build a wooden boat the foam sandwich boat could be reasonable self build alternative. Sandor Torani built the first of these boats assisting in the special building instructions provided to those wishing to build a foam sandwich boat, Pictures can be seen by clicking the above link.
