Windows

Windows are made of Perspex, and must be secured on the outside of the cabin. In the early days they were fitted with auto ‘H’ rubber, but popped out when the boat capsized and this method is now illegal.

The enclosed drawing and  photos shows the general outline, the way they have been done on two of my boats (La Cosa is very old style) see the pictures.

I think the one piece looks better. The perspex is not cheap, but the only way to go; We suggest about 4mm and tinted (usually smoke). I think you will be paying $2/300 for it, but you will appreciate the light & extra visibility.

The front window on “Old China” measures 1160 x 90mm.

When you cut the piece out from one side using a jigsaw, you can use it as a pattern for the other. Then have the perspex cut to 15/20mm larger. Pre drill the holes for the stainless 1/8th x  5/8 –1/2” round head machine screws that will hold it in place – about every 10 – 12 cm should do. When ready to fit, put a line of silicon along the edge. Then put in all the screws, with washers on the inside and trim the silicon, filling where necessary. Make sure the screws a tight, as the window becomes part of the cabin structure.
