Trailer for Hartley TS16

Considerations – a guide only Issued by Barrie Heath on 9 January 2004

This is not a Hartley TS16 Association document

Length 3850mm from end roller to point vertically below the snubbing block on the winch post. This is your main “looking” point.
Wheels Min 9”, preferably aluminium or gal. If wheels are steel and not gal, be sure they are a standard type eg; Holden Torana so easily replaced. Hubs should be ones that take standard bearings Think also of a spare wheel (and maybe spare hub & bearings.)
Winch Preferably one with 1:1 & 5:1 ratio, separate handle to fit spindles.
Rollers At least 4, pref 5, with rear end one being a double
Support Definitely not wobble wheels, as these put too much pressure in small area of hull and eventually cause damage. Skids along inside of chine, with main contact point when travelling at frame 4, to end of trailer with felt or carpet covering
Retrievermate Not really, known to put holes in boats
Springs Be sure not clogged with rust, and type where hinged one end and floating other.
Finish Gal is preferable
Sub Frame Check that axle & springs are on a sub frame that can be moved along the chassis to adjust balance
Jocky wheel Can have solid or pneumatic tyre
Hitch Old screw types are illegal. Hitch should be spring loaded with safety latch
Preferably on board to go on transom, but this can be done later – Rego label should be alongside number plate.

TILT TRAILER TO SUIT HARTLEY T.S.16.

Written and drawn by Phil York 1995

1. Longitudinal frames over springs are raised to give clearance to axle. They are strengthened with off-cuts of Lysaght "C" section underneath and at web closures over spring hangers. Assemble with web (vertical face) to outside of bailer.

2. Cut top and bottom flanges of main longitudinal frames d "B" and bend web to reduce width and form clearance fit to tow bar mid weld where cut. Longitudinal frames are one piece front to rear. Fit strengthening plates 90 x 6 to main longitudinal members top and sides where abutting to-gether.

3 All cross members are fitted with web to front, with exception of rear member "C". A through wing bolt may be fitted horizontally through side strengthening plates and towbar in lieu of sprung shooting bolt (latch) to close tilting towbar.

4. The pivoting point 20mm from rear end of towbar is fitted with a through bush 155mm long, with spacer bushes over through bush to centralize tow bar. Strengtheners 90 x 6 are fitted to close webs and a 12mm bolt acts as pivot

5. 13inch wheels are preferred for or easy rolling, although wheels as small as Mini Minor wheels are acceptable. Mudguard clearance heights can be varied to suit. Wheel hub stud dia., bolt P.C.D.(bolt circle, dia.) and number of studs will vary depending on the wheel type chosen. Similarly a 10 inch inflated jockey wheel is preferred for us on sand or grass. Fit jockey wheel clamp to side of tow bar 215 from front to centre line.

6. Strengthening pieces 32 x 5 are fitted to the two main cross members at top, where they intersect with longitudinal members. At the bottom at intersection 40 high angle pieces are used as spacers to mount it tension rods 12mm dia to offset shock loading.

7. Four double rollers (similar to Whitworths cat no 91017) should be used to support hull between rear of trailer and front cross members, and one. single roller is used for forward end, mounted above towbar tilt point. A suitable "V" support is also required to secure bow to winch post. It is most important that all rollers share the load. To allow fine adjustment: the rollers are attached to the trailer frame flange (top face) with angle brackets (attached with one 10mrn bolt per bracket). These can be height adjusted with packing pieces, or washers.

8. A 500kg 5:1-1: type winch, with separate handle is popular, but a fixed handle 5:1 unit is suitable.

9 Mudguards may be purchased or hand made by bending I8 swg. gal sheet. These home made units are both strong (suitable as steps when climbing aboard) and easy to attach with 50 x 50 angles (scrap) front and rear extending outwards; from longitudinal members over springs. The rear angle can also be used for attaching the boat hold down strap ( extend angle to outer edge of mudguard and fit diagonal stiffening rod below to of-set upward strain ). This positions the hold down strap at rear of cabin. When forming mudguards 18 s.w.g. gal bends- easily and neatly (to form sides) by clamping the 50mm mudguard edge between two pion of 50 x 50 timber in a bench vice and using the wide ( and stronger) face for pulling down to form a right angle bend. If bending manually first cut sides (not right across) at intersection paints, of front - top - and rear and bend each edge separately (its easier) then bend the two cross points to form the front, top and rear, pop riveting the overlaps at the intersecting edges and bolt to mounting angles.

10. The. outer ends of the two main cross members am closed with a filler piece. This allows the (under chine) boat supporting cradle posts to be bolted directed to the trailer fames, scribing the bolt hole positions at, the required height from the pre drilled filler pieces, two x l0mm bolts to each post. This is the reason why the two main cross members are of different lengths.

11. The top of the winch post doesn't really require a flat plate fitted. The 50mm tube can be, closed at the front end with a 50x50x 115 (scrap) angle, which is drilled for the two front winch attaching bolts, with the rear bolted to tube. A suitable length of 50mm dia. PVC tube mounted vertically on the side of the winch post makes a convenient storage point for detached type winch handles.

12. Consider mounting the four 25 x 25 R.H.S. diagonal braces with the greater diagonal section dimension vertical. Drill two breather holes to underside of each diagonal brace (one at each end) ¼” dia- prior to galvanizing frame.

13. Carter Wesco specialize in trailer parts. S70 4leaf springs, 44 wide x71c:c are adequate for the job (rated at 1000kg pair) Quick release coupling type WF3 is very suitable, but W 15 5 can be substituted. Carter Wesco also have a range of wheel hub types, shackle plate-stand bolts, fish plates, U-bolts and full or stub axles.

14. To allow fore and aft adjustment for boat balance on trailer the winch post is clamped to tow bar using either plates top and bottom drilled 12mm clearance at 87mm centres, with top plates welded to bottom of winch post legs, or by "U” bolts through top plates.

Persons contemplating, building a trailer should be aware of the regulations covering trailer construction, issued by The Transport and Federal Office Of Road Safety, available from the Roads and Traffic Authority in NSW at vehicle inspection stations.
